Saturday night marked Sweet Tea Shakespeare’s second annual fundraising event, “Shakespeare Speakeasy.” It was a glorious evening full of music, food, friendship, and booze.
In true STS fashion, the event was a family affair, made possible by the creativity and cooperation of so many. Dirtbag Ales hosted the evening and provided our own special brew, the Groundling Porter, full of maple & bourbon flavors. Enticing aromas filled the space thanks to our wonderful friends at Blackstone Smokehouse, who put such care into each menu. The room itself took on our signature character thanks to the efforts of our company members: Brandon strung our lights and draped our fabrics with his usual daredevilry and devotion to detail. Our new t-shirts, designed by Jacob, were displayed by Medina near the cornhole game which they built and painted with our logo. Kaley, Katie, Jessica, Reagan, and Ruth decorated the room throughout the evening with their glamorous costuming while Tohry and Nathan emceed the event with their usual charisma and brilliance. People clapped and sang and shouted, delighting in the abundance of good company.
Faces both familiar and new glowed with the warmth that only delicious food, good booze, great music, and fond fellowship can provide. Our families came. Introductions were made and compliments given. People were generous, giving their time and talent and treasure. There was laughter – such laughter! And then, the following words were spoken:
“Each Sweet Tea Shakespeare production is home-made, a gift from us to our audiences, made often by our very own hands and voices and bodies. When you come to Sweet Tea Shakespeare, you’re buying locally-sourced Shakespeare.”
And that, friends, is the truth – your generosity enables us to hand-craft each show, each night, for this community. We are so grateful to you for the experience and the opportunity. We are so grateful to those of you who’ve come to a show, who’ve contributed your time and talent, and who’ve donated to our season. And it’s not too late – we are gladly accepting sponsorships throughout the 2015-2016 season. Your gifts enable our gifts to grow, to make more connections, and to reach more people.
From our hearts to yours, thank you for your presence and your presents. Handmade gifts truly are the nicest kind.
