Emma Woodhouse has it all: beauty, wealth, status, wit. She also has a talent for matchmaking, and delights in pairing off the eligible men and women in town, much to the chagrin of her disapproving friend Mr. Knightley. But when Emma decides to find a husband for her protégée Harriet Smith, she sets off a chain of events that could break several hearts…including her own.

On paper, Emma Woodhouse seems pretty perfect: beautiful, wealthy, social status—and she knows how to use them all to her advantage. She does have one major flaw though, which comes out fairly early on in the show. Still amid her tempestuous emotions, Emma finds herself at odds with her companion Mr. Knightley, who sees through her facade and has no qualms about calling her out on it.

The show is full of all your favorite characters—including the love triangles, unrequited loves, and obsessed matriarchs that color any good Austen novel.

Emma, Sweet Tea Shakespeare’s new spin on a beloved classic, is adapted from Jane Austen’s beloved novel by Claire F. Martin. The new production mixes all the favorites of this delightful Regency rom-com with Sweet Tea Shakespeare’s hallmark live music preshow. The production has one foot in classic fare and the other in a contemporary theatre vibe like no others. The show is the final installment of Sweet Tea Shakespeare’s 21-22 plays in Raleigh.

The production performs live and in-person in Leggett Theater at William Peace University in downtown Raleigh and will enjoy an on-demand streaming release of the entire performance on Saturdays in the production run.

If you’ve always thought Austen wrote her novels for someone like, well, you, this production will deliver that experience even more directly as Sweet Tea Shakespeare seeks to include its audience in the circle of storytelling each time we perform.
