Dido, Queen of Carthage By Thomas Nash and Christopher Marlowe
Aeneas, prince of the lost city of Troy and son of the goddess Venus, is aboard a ship bound for the North African coast when he becomes lost in a storm. The god Jupiter steps in and saves him by calming the seas, allowing Aeneas to land safely. At first, all seems well. Once on land, Aeneas meets Dido, the Queen of Carthage, and he tells her of the destruction of Troy and the purpose for his trip and destiny: to found a new Troy in Italy. She supports Aeneas’s goal and agrees to supply his ships. But then Cupid arrives and casts a spell to make her fall in love with Aeneas. More storms (literally and figuratively) ensue as now Dido, in love with Aeneas, desperately tries to keep Aeneas from leaving.
